Figure out what you really want A flexible schedule is a general concept that can be interpreted in different ways. Candidates often ask for flexible hours, but everyone understands it in their own way: possibility to have lunch at any time during the working day; opportunity to leave the workplace for personal matters and work it out in the evening or on the weekend; working from home once a week; working four days a week instead of five; or shifting the traditional 9-to-5 to something that works, etc. Have you ever thought if you actually need to work from home some days or shifting the traditional working hours to those more appropriate for you? 2. Do your research Flexible scheduling opportunities might already be available within your company, although you might not currently be aware of it. So check your company policies and ask your manager or colleges to find out what options are there before making a formal request. 3. Try to fill your boss shoes Make sure that your work results will not be affected due to the new schedule. It might be critical for some professions to work directly in the office or in a specific period of time. Additionally, when it comes to the specific industries (such as IT), team work often helps to resolve issues much faster. Consider whether you really have the ability to work as efficiently in a flexible schedule. 4. Try to predict questions You should start from considering the questions: How will a flexible schedule make you more efficient? How do you see your work in the new environment? When are you going to be available and how your colleges should connect you? How are you going to report your results? What meetings are you going to attend in person? Answers are best written as points or short speeches. You may even create presentation materials to show how serious your approach is. 5. Find the right time There are two options to discuss flexible hours: before accepting a job offer; after you have already worked for a while at the company. Let’s be honest, it is not the best idea to change rules when you have work in the company only for a few months. It does not look professional. So if you did not discuss flexible options at the beginning, you should wait at least six months from your start date to discuss changes (unless something critical happened). Raise this issue at a regular career meeting if this is possible, so you can discuss the results and talk about the strategy for the next period. The timing may be different for you but only when you have shown good results and your boss understands your value for the company. 6. Ask your college Ask your colleges with the flexible schedule to share experience of their negotiation. If there is nobody in your company, ask those who were trying to discuss it or find friends from other companies in your sphere and ask them. It could help you determine the most difficult issues in the organization and discussion of flexible working hours and get ready. 7. Set up a meeting Determine the right person to discuss the flexible schedule (in most cases this will be your boss) and put a time on the calendar for both of you to discuss your needs. Do not forget to indicate the topic of the conversation in the invitation to the meeting. I suggest discussing such requests in person so that you can build a constructive dialogue rather than simply get a response without being able to clarify details or alternatives. 8. Focus on the benefits to the company Clearly outline the benefits your new schedule will have for the company. If it is the win-win offer, the conversation becomes more comfortable and your boss will be more receptive and willing to indulge you. To ensure that there is no reason to say “No”, address the possible hindrances, and suggest viable ways to overcome them. It will also show your boss that you care about the overall success of the business, not only about your personal comfort. 9. Ask to do a trial period Suggesting a trial period is the best way to get your boss’ approval. It will make your employer feel confident that if something goes wrong, he can get things back. The trial period may last from a few weeks to a couple of months. During this period you have to do all your best to show that the flex schedule has been a great decision. It is important to keep track of your work. In the beginning it may be crucial to make detailed reports about your activities and results each working day to avoid misunderstandings. Remember that it is also a good time for you to understand if it does really work in your case. Do not be afraid to get back to standard schedule if you see that things go wrong and it turned out too heavy to manage the workload this way. 10. Be ready to compromise Your supervisor may delay your request do not matter how credible your points are. Always be ready to discuss other options and do not give up. Ask why your offer was denied and how you can prove that you deserve a chance. It may be a good idea to come back to this conversation later, for example, on the next annual assessment. If you are sure that you have done everything right and flexible working hours are critical for you, it may be a good reason to quit your job in this company and look for new opportunities. Get to know yourself; most students do not really know who they are by the time they are ready to apply to college. This often means trying things that are initially outside your comfort zone and then sticking with the things that really excite you. Admissions officers at selective schools report that about 80% of their applicants are academically qualified, so students need to distinguish themselves from the competition in other ways. By developing your personal profile, you can show colleges that you will make a valuable contribution to your future campus community. What strategies can students use to improve their grades and academic performance? Always come to class on time. Tardiness can only bring negative attention, and you might miss valuable in-class discussion. Be prepared to participate in class; let your opinions and ideas be heard. Sitting in the front of the class can help you maintain eye contact and pay better attention, which will also improve your participation. You can go above and beyond teachers’ expectations by going to a local college library and searching for books or articles about subjects being covered in class. Why is it important to talk to your teachers? Teachers are an underutilized resource. Many students do not ask their teachers for help, often because they are afraid to admit that they do not understand something. Most teachers will make an extra effort if students make an extra effort; you will not be penalized for asking for help. What are some common mistakes that college applicants make? Students often choose schools for the wrong reasons (such as parents, friends, or college rankings) and they forget to form their own opinion. When the time comes, you should really know about the schools’ course offerings, communities, professors, and student bodies, and you should have a clear picture of how you might enhance the community. One of the most convenient aspects of Google Docs is that you can take your notes with you wherever you go, without having to carry around your laptop or tablet. Google Docs has an app for smartphones, allowing you to view your notes on your phone and edit them whenever needed. Similar to the sharing qualities that Google Docs has, the website OneClass acts as one large Dropbox for lecture notes, instructional videos, and exam study guides. The site lets you upload your own notes and download those of other users so that you can compare your notes to others and improve the quality of your own notes. If you have the software of Microsoft Office on your laptop and/or tablet, Microsoft OneNote is another option for taking notes with technology and keeping them organized in one place. Just like any word-processing app, you can type notes just as you would on a word document, but you can also incorporate multimedia into your note-taking on OneNote. OneNote allows you to easily incorporate clippings from the internet, or diagrams drawn with a touch screen (if using a tablet), into your notes taken on the software. With OneNote, you can make countless digital notebooks for different courses and carry them around in a single technological device without worrying about carrying specific folders/notebooks around campus. Before purchasing Microsoft Office software, make sure you check if your university has free Microsoft Office for enrolled students, or if the seller you are buying from has a discount for college students.

The best part? You might even get to plan and host events specific to your own individual interests. For instance, one day might be all about outdoor pursuits, like hiking, kayaking, camping, and more. The next day could be something more laid back, like arts and crafts, movie nights, and miniature cooking classes. The ability to plan activities for the kids allows you the chance to share something of yourself with them: your passion. If you are studying art, imagine how much more excited you would be to teach kids how to make macaroni sculptures than having to teach campers how to put a tent together. On the flip side, if you are a person who especially enjoys the outdoors, imagine how excited you would be to show kids how to build a campfire rather than how to mix primary colors. No matter who you are or what you are interested in, being a summer camp counselor will allow you to share those interests with groups of kids ready to learn. Teach skills After your time working as a summer camp counselor is over, your legacy will live on. As corny as it sounds, your work will live on through the kids you worked with. You can show kids how to play games like hopscotch and Red Rover, or better yet, show them YOUR version of hopscotch and Red Rover. Teach them basic survival skills, like how to build a fire or how to decipher between poisonous and safe berries. The same thing goes for the kids that you are going to work with. As a counselor, your job is exactly that: to counsel. You have the chance to be a listening ear and a figure of support to young and developing minds. Summer camps allow kids to interact with other kids in situations and circumstances that could prove challenging or emotionally exhausting. On top of it, some kids may find themselves becoming homesick. As a summer camp counselor, you must keep their morale high and their faith in you even higher. The paycheck at the end of every hard work week will be rewarding, but the feeling of supporting and impacting a child’s life is a million times more rewarding. Have fun Last and most importantly: have fun. Summer camps are a place for kids to relax and enjoy fun activities with fun people, such as yourself.
